Japanese imports have become very popular in the last few years. Especially popular are the kei trucks or mini trucks as we call them in North America. Kei Trucks (pronounced "k") is the term used to describe any vehicles in Japan with an engine size of no more than 660 cc. The main focus of Samurai Trucks is the  importing of the Japanese 4x4 Mini Truck as they are an amazing little work horse and offer much more value and quality than any atv or utv such as a Rhino, Gator or Mule.

Some of the main reasons for the increase in exports to Canada is the fact that Japanese Domestic Market cars and trucks are built to a higher standard than their North American counterparts. In Japan there are very strict and expensive inspections (shaken) which must be done on a vehicle on a regular basis. Due to these inspections most times it is cheaper for a person to simply buy a new car rather than have the vehicle comply with the regulations.  To find a similar vehicle in North America with low miles for the year is next to impossible.

Japan has very strict inspection regulations for any vehicles over three years old called the "shaken". Generally, as a vehicle gets older it becomes cheaper to just buy a new vehicle rather than pay for a shaken and then have to make the required repairs to a vehicle to get it to pass. The necessary repairs needed which would fail a car or truck are very minimal but in Japan end up costing much more than they would here in North America. For example I witnessed a car fail inspection because the inspector felt that the bolts on the seat frame were rusty-I saw that there were some minimal spots of surface rust which looked like it had come from someone spilling a soda on the back of the seat and then running down onto the head of the bolt. I have seen firsthand how a shaken inspection works and actually was forced to quit video taping an inspection-the reason I believe is because the inspection for the most part is a joke. They do inspect brakes and emissions but other than that they do a "shake down" of a vehicle. The car, truck or van is driven onto a platform which then wiggles the car while a person walks along underneath tapping here and there with some type of rod. I have video of this I will post soon and it may be the only one in existence.   The shaken, actually is more of a tool of the government and the big auto industries to keep the Japanese economy rolling. The more vehicles that go thru the shaken, the more money the government makes in the fees. The more vehicles that fail the inspection, the more people there are who now have to buy a new car, truck or van. When these people buy a new vehicle they have just supplied another vehicle, with virtually nothing wrong with it, to be exported. It is a whole chain which keeps the Japanese economy going as best as it can with millions of vehicles trading hands on a weekly basis.

The Japanese Mini Trucks we import have either 4 speed or 5 speed transmissions and in the odd case we come across an automatic. The Japanese Mini 4x4 Mini Trucks are generally 3 cylinder, 660 cc gas engines except for the Subaru and Honda Acty which are 4 cylinder. The Subaru also has a rear mounted engine as opposed to the rest which are mid or front mount engines. The Subaru Sambar can also be found with a super charger, but again this is rare and everyone is trying to find one so the prices have been going up for these.

In the US the restriction is 25 years or older in order for an imported Japanese car to be licensed for most states. Recently there are states which have been allowing the licensing and road use of the trucks less than 25 years old everywhere except state highways/freeways. With the ever increasing cost of fuel we are seeing more demand for other states to follow suit and allow these great gas misers to be licensed.

At this point the majority of the US imported mini trucks have to be governed (usually a plate is welded at the base of the gear shift limiting you to only reverse and first gear) to be imported to the US if newer but are strictly for off road use only. Canadian government regulations restrict us from importing any vehicles newer than 15 years old but they may be licensed for road use with no restrictions. Samurai Trucks specializes in Kei Class vehicles but will bring in any Japanese manufactured vehicle upon customer request.

We have expanded our company under the name of Japan Auto Source and will source and import any JDM vehicles (Japan Domestic Market) Whether you are looking for diesel 4x4 Vans, SUVs, mini 4x4 trucks or a sports car or luxury sedan we will find it for you. Samurai Trucks and Japan Auto Source will work with our customers in acquiring whatever type vehicle requested. It is not uncommon also to come across American made vehicles with very low mileage in excellent shape for a very reasonable price otherwise impossible to find back home. We have seen corvettes, 1969 camaros, and classic cars in Japan and available for export. SAMURAI TRUCKS has access to all the Japanese Auctions and a large number of specialized auto dealers in Japan. We take pride in every vehicle we import and strive to bring satisfaction to all our clients. We can supply container loads on request for resale.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What type of motor is in these trucks?

The trucks come with a 45 HP  660cc 3 or 4 cylinder gas motor. The transmissions are manual in either 4 or 5 speeds-sometimes we come across an automatic, but it is very rare in a 4x4. Japanese Mini Trucks weigh about 1400 lbs and have a payload of over 800 lbs. The trucks also come with a radio and standard dash Components. Most of the mini trucks have fold down bedsides.

Where do I get parts?

Most parts you will need for repairs, clutches, water pumps, belts, spark plugs, etc... are available at the local parts stores. (Napa, Auto Zone, etc...) We also stock parts. Any of the more major parts such as transmissions, clutches and even engines can be purchased through www.samuraitrucks.com

Who can fix my truck? Any mechanic shop can work on these awesome little machines. The kei trucks are regular 3&4 cylinder gas engines. There are very few moving parts in a kei truck and the parts are very reasonably priced, in many cases much cheaper than parts for North American vehicles.

How do they compare to a normal ATV? The kei truck will do anything an atv will do and then some-not to mention you will stay warm and dry doing it! Or if you are in a hot climate, the a/c will keep you cool while your friends on their atvs are outside sweating. In Canada and in some of the USA the Japanese Mini 4x4 trucks can be licensed for street use.
